“It wasn’t my plan to start a paddleboard company…”
Sliver Paddleboards was started in 2010 after I was unable to find any environmentally responsible paddleboards. Paddleboarding is inherently a very clean activity but after you consider the harmful chemicals, overseas manufacturing, and short lifespan of foam boards, things look quite different.
It wasn’t my plan to start a paddleboard company until I stumbled on a story about a local guy on Vancouver Island building wood surfboards. The story explained how the wood boards were hundreds of times better for the planet and how they had actually absorbed more harmful C02 while the trees were alive than was consumed during their construction. I looked in to buying a wood SUP kit but there was nobody offering anything that interested me. The kits offered either had goofy construction techniques or the shapes were boxy and unappealing.
Tree to sea
I designed and built my first wood paddleboard thinking it would be my last. The first board turned out great; it looks as nice today and brings me as much happiness as the first day I used it. I believe that one of the best ways to live sustainably is to own very few, very high quality things that bring happiness every time you use them.
